WHOS SUING? WHY?
Ever wondered if racism in sports still exists? Even if it is not on the professional level, how about sports organizations around the world? If you think its completely gone, you’re going to learn something new today! I felt like a teacher after saying that haha.
On Thursday, June 25, a Chicago Little League Team -Jackie Robinson West- filed a lawsuit against the organizations governing body, stating that they unfairly and unjustly stripped the title of these young men that made them heroes in the city they come from and made them nationally known! They added that the governing body refuses to provide extra information on this decision. What is going on?
IS IT FAIR?
Jackie Robinson West’s attorney for the case stated that the issue that Little League International had was that the players were considered ineligible, because they did not live in league boundaries. The attorney also added that he believed the team was singled out and excluded because of their full black population. Does that assumption have some truth to it? What do you think?
After many parents and friends of the Chicago Little League Team were interviewed, their main concern was that they believed not only race was involved in this decision, but other unjust and unfair measures against the team.
This all occurred after this underdog and unknown (Jackie Robinson West) defeated opponent after opponent, including their victory in Vegas for the nation crown of the Little League World Series. It was something to watch. I remember I read about them a while back and to see what they have accomplished is truly astonishing. They fell to South Korea in the World Championship game, but still what an inspirational stories for young athletes around the world!
Thousands of fans would come out to watch these boys play. After their tremendous victories, they were treated to a huge parade downtown, a trip to the White House to meet Barrack Obama (Wow, what the heck!), and to go to the beautiful city of San Francisco to watch the World Series.
It was then in late February where the announcement was released that Little League International was going to strip the team of its title, suspend its manager, and suspend the team from the league until replacing the president and treasurer of the team. Little harsh? Little League International definitely did not think so.
Henderson was hired by Jackie Robinson West to investigate the issue and he did state speaking to a Little League official, but added that he did not provide him with any information on substance.
The only thing that makes a light bulb come up in my brain after this was a simple formula. After taking the time out to read this organizations handbook and its rules, it came to my attention that they are required to check for a players eligibility before each and every game and competition. Failure to do this by the organization really questions if this law suit may have some weight in court!
The team announced in April that it would switch leagues and play for the Babe Ruth League’s Cal Ripken division.
So, wow, that is something to talk about. What is the concern and what is going to come out of this lawsuit. Is it racism?
I believe there is some racism involved, but not entirely.
A league’s mistake, with their prideful attitude to not admit it, lead to this team to commit the mistake they were committing without even being aware of it. Cant wait to see what is going to happen with this!
What do you think? Its your turn. Leave a comment below on your side in this case. Thank you 🙂
