Look, obviously the Knicks need to worry about the KP injury. The Knicks don’t need to worry about it “ending his career” though.
Guys like Derrick Rose are the players you need to worry about with an ACL injury. Porzingis isn’t a very explosive guy, so his ACL isn’t going to tear again just by taking jumpers. The way he tore it was on one of his most explosive plays ever. KP doesn’t have a very explosive game, he is normally taking shots or posting up. He will definitely stay away from the crazy dunks for some time after the injury.
How Serious Is It?
An ACL injury return can vary from 6-12 months. According to Dr. Armin Tehrany, the founder of Manhattan Orthopedic Care.
“The success rate in NBA athletes is very, very good. So we should expect that he’ll do very well, as others have in the past,” Tehrany said. “In terms of how quickly he can get back, that depends on a few different factors — the severity of the injury, how stiff he is now, and how well the post-op rehab goes.”
Tehrany said the next few days will be crucial in Porzingis’ recovery, as swelling will determine how soon surgeons can operate on the knee.
The good news is that the Knicks reported that KP was walking on the injury about 30 minutes after it happened and he was “ok”. Some guys are not even able top put the slightest bit of pressure on it. If he can walk around right after the injury, he should likely be back to normal anywhere from 6-8 months.
Porzingis can begin the rehab process “right away” after surgery, according to Tehrany.
“He can walk on the leg using assistance and a brace,” Tehrany said. “Range of motion and gentle strengthening also begin right away. Running usually does start at around three months. Shooting the ball can usually begin around that time as well.”
As long as KP didn’t have any other preexisting injuries in the knee, he should have a normal recovery.
The Knicks believe that Porzingis will return “bigger, better and stronger.”
Judging by KP’s work ethic and determination, he will be back.
Hopefully he’ll be back for the start of next season. It is very possible.
