Where will you be Monday, January 8th at 7pm? I know where I’ll be. On my couch, in my dorm room, watching the National Championship. Georgia vs. Alabama. SEC vs. SEC.
Now obviously, Nick Saban’s team is favorited, because its Nick Saban, and Alabama. Ever since the College Football Playoff came into existence in 2012, they have been there. They have a few trophies under their belt, and have all the momentum in the world after stomping all over a seemingly over-hyped Clemson team? But that’s besides the point. The point is that this game, this National Championship is so much different than the rest.
The dynamic is different, the style of play, however, is the same. Methodical offenses that try to wear you down, and high flying defenses looking to force turnovers.
The history is also in Bama’s favor. All time, Bama leads Georgia in head to head wins (38-25) and have won the last three matchups versus the Bulldogs of Georgia. The Crimson Tide also have doubled the amount of SEC Championships won (30 to Georgia’s 15) and have won 15 National Championships to Georgia’s 2.
If you are a Bama fan, everything I have stated so far pleases you… that’s about to change.
The Georgia Bulldogs will win the National Championship, and they will win it easily. My score prediction: 30-17.
First of all, the game is in the Mercedes-Benz dome in Louisiana. Neutral ground. Yes, Alabama fans travel well, but so do Georgia fans. According to TickPick, 66% of ticket sales for Monday’s game have come from Georgia, as 5% have come from Alabama… that should worry you if you bleed Crimson Red.
Second of all, the three headed monster that is Nick Chubb, Sony Michel & D’Andre Swift have combined for 34 touchdowns and over 3000 yards on the ground this year. If they establish the run game early, look out. Bama’s defense is good, so the only way to beat them is to get them tired and catch them playing lazy.
Lastly, Jake Fromm is playing like an absolute stud. The freshman has pulled together a phenomenal season; 64% pass completion, 23 touchdowns to 5 interceptions and a passer rating of 166.4. That’s madden type numbers right there. He can also perform in the big stage, as we saw against Baker Mayfield and OU in the Rose Bowl.
Now if you’re a Bama fan and you are still reading this… I’m impressed. If I’m completely wrong about this, feel free to tear me a new one. If the Georgia Bulldogs aren’t the NCAA Champions on Monday night, something must have gone terribly wrong.
But until kickoff, we’ll just have to sit and be patient, we’re about to have an all SEC championship game, and it will be beautiful to watch.
