While Hershey, Pennsylvania is known for the famous Hershey Chocolate Factory, teenager and Hershey native, Christian Pulisic is making a name for himself playing top tier European soccer. Pulisic is currently playing for Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga. He debuted for the senior club at the age of 17.
Not only did make his club debut, he also made his debut for the United States Men’s National Team. It did not take young for him to make his impact on the international level. He became the youngest American player to ever score an international goal. In 13 total appearances for the National team he has had three goals and 6 assists.
On March 24, Pulisic set up teammate Clint Dempsey for two goals, while scoring a goal himself in a 6-0 World Cup Qualifying Match vs. Honduras. He also assisted on the only goal in a 1-1 draw vs. Panama on March 24. That game was also a qualifying game for the 2018 World Cup.
He has helped Dortmund make a late run in the UEFA Champions League Cup this year. With the team in the quarterfinals, he has one goal and two assists in six Champions League appearances. The Champions League is one of the most important European season trophies.
It is time for the United States to have an actual superstar. Of course you can never forget about players like Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, and Alexi Lalas. But none of those players have never really played or grasps the likes of European soccer. Dempsey being the only one, playing for Fulham from 2007 to 2012, scoring 50 goals in 184 appearances.
Pulisic, now 18, knows he still has a long way to go. There will be a lot of pressure on him to not bust like our last wonderkid, Freddy Adu. As of right now he has the skills and knowledge of the game to grow. It is also important for the United States to be competitive and qualify for the 2018 World Cup, as they are bidding to co-host the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada.
Argentina has Lionel Messi, Portugal has Cristiano Ronaldo, Brazil has Neymar, France has Pogba and Griezmann, can Pulisic be the superstar that the United States has needed to make them a force in international soccer.
