For the second time in three years Chelsea FC have won the Premier League title. This second title coming off an underachieving 2015-2016 season. Behind the star power of Eden Hazard, N’Golo Kante, Diego Costa, and unsung heroes like Cesar Azpilicueta, Chelsea was able to clinch the title with two games to spare.
N’Golo Kante was one of the most impressive transfers this season, proving his worth by winning the Football Writer’s Association Player of the Year and Professional Footballers Association Player of the Year. He has also now won back to back titles, with his first title coming with the cinderella from last season, Leicester City. He has joined an elite group of players that have won back to back titles. These players include Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Michael Laudrup, and Andrea Pirlo.
Eden Hazard had an excellent rebound season. He scored 15 goals for the Blues this season after only scoring four goals the previous season. He was one of the main reasons that Chelsea was able to reclaim the top spot in England and guaranteeing them a spot in next years Champions League tournament.
Cesar Azpilicueta logged the most minutes for this Chelsea team, as well as the whole league. He played a total of 3,240 minutes this season, appearing in every game. He has also been one of the most versatile players in the Premier league, shifting across the whole back line of the defense. Azpilicueta also tallied the most completed passes in the league this year with 2,340 passes.
The clubs leading scorer, Diego Costa, finished 20 goals in to the back of the net. He, however will not likely be back with the team next season after agreeing to personal terms with Tianjin Quanjian of the new, wealthy Chinese super league. He too improved from a lackluster season where he only netted 12 goals in 28 games.
Chelsea will look to keep most of the current team intact for next season. Some players will need to be replaced, for example long time Blue, John Terry, will not be returning to the club for his age 37 season. Terry has been a part of the Chelsea club for his entire 19 seasons as a professional.
With the rest of the table still fighting for the top four to clinch a spot in the Champions League or the fifth spot for a spot in the Europa League. Rounding out the top five Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal. The standings are almost set in stone, as we all know in sports, anything can happen.
