Early this morning the UFC announced that Women’s featherweight Champion Germaine de Randamie (7-3-0) has removed from the UFC 214 co-main event, which takes place on July 29, and that she has been stripped of the title.
The announcement comes after de Randamie was adament that she wouldn’t accept a fight with number one contender Cris “Cyborg” Justino. When asked why she wouldn’t accept the fight de Randamie said “I have my reasons.” It is known around MMA that Justino has tested positive for PED’s during her career.
The co-main event at UFC 214 will still have a women’s featherweight title bout, but it will be between Justino (16-1-0, 1 NC) and Megan Anderson (8-2-0).
The official statement on the change from the UFC reads as follows:
“UFC has informed Germaine de Randamie and her management team that she is being removed as the women’s featherweight champion due to her unwillingness to fight the No. 1 ranked contender, Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino. Subsequently, top contender Justino will face newly signed Invicta FC featherweight champion Megan Anderson for the UFC women’s featherweight title in the co-main event of UFC® 214: CORMIER vs. JONES 2, July 29 in Anaheim, Calif.
UFC maintains that any champion is expected to accept fights against the top contenders in their respective weight classes in order to maintain the integrity of the sport.”
de Randamie has issued a statement via social media, translated from Dutch, on the situation:
“As many of you know by now, the UFC has stripped me of the [title]. For those of us who don’t quite know what that means; the UFC has took my title because I refuse to fight against their number 1 contender (I have my reasons). It remains special for this news from the media to learn and I regret that it happened this way, but it is what it is!”
Well I hear you already think ‘she’s scared! What a bad champion! A disgrace to the sport! They don’t deserve to be a champion!’ etc.,etc.. I see it all over. But regardless of what everyone thinks [and] does, I walk my own path. And you can agree or not.”
Gutted that I’m absolutely not, means that I quit. This means only that I have more reasons to fight even harder sometimes (literally) for which I am and what I want. The UFC is far away from me!! It’s easy to stand with the crowd. It takes courage to stand alone.”
